The one relationship the whole CoS job runs through

Most of what makes a Chief of Staff effective never shows up on an org chart. It shows up in one relationship: the one with your principal. Get it right and everything else gets easier. Get it wrong and you spend your days chasing tasks with no real authority.

That's the piece we published today. We asked operators in the community who clearly got that relationship right what they actually did differently, and seven patterns kept coming up.

Speed is the currency of this job. Carrie McMahon's take is that the way to keep it is to slow down. She's a two time Chief of Staff at one of the fastest growing AI companies in San Francisco, and she treats managing her energy as a performance strategy, not a wellness perk.

Her argument lands because she's in the seat. When you're depleted, the part of your brain that weighs tradeoffs stops doing its job, and you make fast calls without the analysis to back them.

The fix isn't an hour on a meditation cushion. It's small and repeatable: box breathing at your desk, a sharper opening question in your next exec one on one ("How are you feeling?" beats "How's your week?"), and protecting the micropauses most of us skip.
